Investment

Barbara Sheehan joins Banyan Investment Management in Toronto as vice-president, marketing. She is responsible for marketing and sales for PCJ Investment Counsel, Banyan's Canadian equity manager. She comes from Scotia Cassels in Toronto, where she was vice-president, institutional client services.

John Zechner becomes chairman and chief investment officer at J. Zechner Associates Inc. in Toronto. Previously, he was president. Also at J. Zechner Associates, David Cohen is promoted to president. Previously, he was vice-president and director.

Mark Riden joins Burgundy Asset Management Ltd. as vice-president and chief financial officer. Also at Burgundy, Craig Pho is promoted to vice-president.

Michael Ptasznik is promoted to vice-president, finance and administration and treasurer at the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSE). Most recently, he was director, finance and administration with the TSE. In his new role, Ptasznik is responsible for treasury, corporate accounting, financial planning, tax risk management and administration.

At Gluskin Sheff & Associates Inc. in Toronto, Jeremy Freedman, John Hasyn, Joanne Lauria, Bruce Leboff and Bill Webb become equity principals. Currently, Freedman is vice-president, client service and business development; John Hasyn is portfolio manager, North American markets; Joanne Lauria is secretary-treasurer; Bruce Leboff is portfolio manager, North American markets; and Bill Webb is a portfolio manager, focusing on North American markets.

State Street Global Advisors Canada(SSgA) announces one promotion and three appointments. Michel Malo is promoted to chief investment officer. He joined SSgA in 1994 as director of portfolio management and manager of active research. In his new role, Malo assumes responsibility for all investment classes. Carl Bang resumes his responsibilities as director of fixed income, after spending two years assisting the Central Bank of Norway with establishing the Norwegian Petroleum Fund. In his new role, Bang will develop and advise on quantitative approaches to global fixed income and global asset allocation. Also at SSgA, Gregory Chrispin joins as senior portfolio manager. He comes from the Export Development Corporation in Ottawa, where he was treasury officer. In his new role, Chrispin is responsible for managing the country selection strategy, as well as the Canadian index participation unit. Louis Basque joins SSgA as product engineer. He comes from Synergy Asset Management, where he was a lead sales executive, responsible for servicing investment dealers and financial planners in Quebec. In his new role with SSgA, Basque will work closely with the sales and portfolio management teams in marketing active global and domestic strategies, as well as the Canadian index participation unit.

Ted Macklin joins Guardian Capital Inc. as managing director, Canadian equity investment. He comes from Montrusco Bolton. Also at Guardian, Mike Weir joins the Canadian equity team as senior portfolio manager. Previously, he was with the Ontario Hospitals Association.

Robert Morgan joins Northern Trust Global Investments in Chicago, Ill. as director of private equity. He comes from Frye-Louis Capital Advisors, LLC in Chicago, where he was director. Also at Northern Trust, Lori Runquist joins in the newly created position of hedge fund product manager. She previously worked at Hedge Fund Research, LLC as managing director of the hedge fund management team.

Benefits

Karen Maidment, former executive vice-president and chief financial officer with Clarica in Waterloo, Ont., is the new executive vice-president and chief financial officer with Bank of Montreal in Toronto. Clarica's president and chief executive officer, Bob Astley, says the company has started a search for her replacement.

Shelly Gorchynski joins WorkRight Training Solutions in Toronto as principal. She comes from Warren Shepell in Toronto, where she was vice-president, operations.

Steven Foye is promoted to consultant in the health and benefits practice of Aon Consulting Inc. in Toronto. Previously, he was an analyst in the health and benefits practice. Also at Aon in Toronto, Catherine Ponting is promoted to consultant in the compensation practice. Previously, Ponting was an analyst in the compensation practice. At Aon in Calgary, Mike Lee joins as vice-president in the compensation practice. He comes from Watson Wyatt, where he was practice leader in the human capital group.

Jacqueline Taggart joins Morneau Sobeco in Toronto as a principal in the communications practice. She comes from Sun Life Financial, where she was director, integrated services.

Anita Fineberg joins IMS Health Canada as corporate counsel and chief privacy officer. Previously, she acted as counsel to the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care. In her new role, Fineberg oversees legal affairs for the company, as well as the development of corporate policies to address the process of legislative and public policy in the areas of health information and electronic commerce. Also at IMS Health, John McCarthy joins as vice-president, finance and administration and chief financial officer. He comes from Bombardier Aerospace, where he was director of North American and international market development for the company's business aircraft division.

Eric Girard is appointed to vice-president, claims, group insurance at Sun Life Assurance Companyof Canada. Previously, he was assistant vice-president, group claims. Girard is responsible for all group plan member services across Canada, including health and dental claims, life and disability claims and group call centres.
