Biting humour
On behalf of the dentists of Canada, I wish to express my disappointment at the cartoon published in the
March 2001 issue of BENEFITS CANADA. Under the heading "A benefit manager's wallet in the hands of a
dentist," the cartoon depicts a nervous looking patient and a wallet with a dentist's hands removing all
the money. The caption under the cartoon reads, "I'm afraid these are all going to have to come out."
Canadian dentists have worked hard, together with the benefits industry, to create an honest and caring
environment in which patients are able to access the dental care they need. This team approach has proven
extremely successful, and Canadians enjoy dental health and dental coverage that is among the best in the
world. The message of this cartoon is damaging to both dentists and the insurance industry and jeopardizes
the good image we have all sought to create.
In future, I urge you to show better judgment in selecting material that is appropriate to publish.
