Barry McInerney, head of investment consulting with William M. Mercer Ltd. in Toronto, is named leader of
William M. Mercer Investment Consulting in the U.S. In addition to his new management responsibilities,
McInerney is involved in consulting to a number of U.S. and multinational clients. He will relocate to New
York from Toronto. Mercer had not named his replacement in Canada at press time.
Harry Marmer joins Franklin Templeton Investments Corp. in Toronto as senior vice-president, institutional
services. Previously, he was with Frank Russell Canada Ltd. as director of institutional investing.
Royal Trust Global Securities Services announces two additions to its European sales team. Chris Sharp
joins as director of business development. He comes to the firm from Citibank, where he was securities
business head for Australia and New Zealand. In his new role, Sharp is responsible for strategic
relationships in the U.K. David Hazard joins the firm as director of business development, where he focuses
on the U.K., Netherlands and Belgium.
Bill Chinery joins Barclays Global Investors Canada Limited in Toronto as managing director, head of client
relationships. Previously, he was with YMG. David Denison is appointed president of Fidelity Investments
Institutional Brokerage Group in Boston, Mass. Previously, he was president of Fidelity Investments Canada
Limited. Replacing Denison as president of Fidelity Investments Canada is Jeffrey Carney, who joins from TD
Bank, where he was executive vice-president in charge of the bank's full-service retail branch distribution
business.
Paul Moore is appointed vice-chair of the Ontario Securities Commission in Toronto. Prior to his
appointment, Moore was a partner in the Toronto office of Torys.
Deutsche Asset Management announces several changes. Thomas Hughes is appointed global chief operating
officer. He joins the firm from Merrill Lynch, where he was managing director and head of the global
securities financing group. In his new role, Hughes is responsible for overseeeing the finance, risk
management, compliance, legal, human resources, operations and technology functions. Hughes replaces Mark
Gelnaw, who is appointed chief operating officer and head of strategic funds for the firm's alternative
investment businesses. Anthony Freitas joins the San Francisco office as director of client services for
the Western region of the U.S. Previously, he was with Watson Wyatt Investment Consulting.
Pensions
John Crocker is named president and chief executive officer of the Hospitals of Ontario Pension Plan
(HOOPP). Crocker has worked as HOOPP's chief investment officer and senior vice-president of investment
management since joining the organization in 1998. In his new position, he also assumes the role of plan
manager. He replaces Susan Crocker (the two are not related), who has left HOOPP to pursue personal
interests.
Mary De Paoli is promoted to vice-president, national sales and marketing, group retirement services, with
Sun Life Financial in Toronto. Previously, she was assistant vice-president, national marketing and sales.
Also at Sun Life, Susan Hunt is promoted to director, marketing and communications, group retirement
services. Previously, she was manager of marketing.
Sophie Desbiens joins the Toronto office of Avalon Actuarial Consulting as actuarial assistant in the
pension benefits practice. She transfers from the firm's Montreal office.

Douglas Hogeboom is appointed president and chief executive officer of Empire Life Insurance Company in
Kingston, Ont. He succeeds Christopher McElvaine, who is retiring as president and chief executive officer
of the firm.
Aon Consulting realigns its Western region, with Joan Fitch, executive vice-president, now overseeing the
Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton offices. Fitch remains Western region head and relocates from Vancouver to
Calgary.Kaylynn Schroeder assumes responsibility for the Winnipeg and Thunder Bay offices, in addition to
her responsibility for Aon's offices in Saskatchewan. She is based in Regina. Wayne Berney, senior
vice-president, relocates from Edmonton to Saskatoon to become part of the Saskatchewan team.
Stanley Assing joins Avalon Actuarial Consulting in Toronto as a consultant in the group benefits practice.
Previously, he worked at Maritime Life.
Anne Charetteis appointed president of the Human Resources Professionals Association of Ontario. Currently,
she is president of The Burke Group, a human resources outsourcing and training firm.
