Pensions
Paul Grisé is named chief investment officer and senior vice-president, investment management, at the
Hospitals of Ontario Pension Plan (HOOPP) in Toronto. He replaces John Crocker, who was promoted to
president and chief executive officer in April. Grisé has worked as HOOPP's vice-president, investment
strategy, since joining the organization in 1999. Before that, he was vice-president and portfolio manager
with Scotia Cassels Investment Counsel.
Joan Johannson, formerly with TD Canada Trust, is appointed director of product and marketing for
investments and pensions at Canada Life in Toronto. She is now responsible for the firm's overall marketing
and product development for both group and individual savings. Also at Canada Life, Simone Edwards,
formerly with TD Canada Trust, joins as manager, integrated investment solutions. In her new role, she is
responsible for handling all of the company's alliance relationships as well as integrating Canada Life's
investment management processes.
Michel Benoit joins Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP in Montreal as partner. Benoit is named national
co-chair of the firm's pensions and benefits practice and shares responsibilities with Ian McSweeney in the
Toronto office. Previously, Benoit worked at Desjardins Ducharme Stein Monast. Also joining Osler from
Benoit's former firm are Josée Dumoulin and François Parent. Both work in the pensions and
benefits practice.
Aon Consulting announces five promotions in its retirement practice. Éric Laberge and François
D'Amour are both promoted to senior vice-presidents from vice-presidents at the company's Montreal office.
In Toronto, Dave Clapperton, Kent Lum and Steve Gendron are promoted to vice-presidents from senior
consultants.
Benefits
Tom Magyarody joins the Ontario Dental Association in Toronto as executive director. He comes from the
Ontario Medical Association, where he was executive director, corporate affairs and administration.
At The Investment Guild in Markham, Ont., Kristen Foulkes joins as group life and health insurance
specialist. She comes to the firm from the Bank of Montreal, where she was a branch manager.
Faizel Alladina, assistant vice-president, group distribution and marketing with Canada Life in Toronto,
assumes new responsibilities for the firm's voice of the customer research for the Canadian division.
Alladina is also responsible for Canada Life's product development and marketing of group benefits.
Investments
Dale Powell joins Howson Tattersall Investment Counsel in Toronto as vice-president, marketing and client
service. He comes from ING Investment Management in Toronto. In his new role, Powell is responsible for the
firm's portfolio management services to institutional investors and high net worth clients, as well as the
firm's Saxon mutual funds.
Knight, Bain, Seath & Holbrook Capital Management Inc. announces three appointments. In Toronto, David
Knight is appointed executive chairman. He founded the firm in 1980 and plays a role in the company's
strategic development. Peter Pennal moves into the position of president and chief executive officer. He
joined the company in 1988 with a background in fixed income portfolio management, asset allocation and
client service. Len McFarland opens the firm's Vancouver office. McFarland joins as vice-president,
responsible for business development and client services in Western Canada. Previously, he worked at J.P.
Morgan Fleming Asset Management in Vancouver as vice-president.
Fidelity Investments in Toronto announces three appointments. Jeff Horbal is promoted to vice-president,
institutional investments. Previously, he was director, institutional investments. Mark Sack joins Fidelity
as director, institutional sales. He comes from Bonham & Co. in Toronto, where he was president and
director. In his new role, Sack is responsible for institutional sales and marketing of new products for
the national defined benefit pension plan marketplace. Pam Haldane is promoted to client manager. Most
recently, she was manager, sales administration.
Investors Group Inc. in Winnipeg announces two senior appointments. Sanford Riley becomes chairman of the
board of directors. Previously, he was president and chief executive officer. Jeffrey Orr joins as the
company's new president and chief executive officer. He comes from BMO Nesbitt Burns, where he served as
chairman and CEO and as vice-chair, investment banking group, Bank of Montreal. At Investors Group
Investment Management (Quebec) Ltd. in Montreal, Lambros Piscopos joins as portfolio manager for the
Investors U.S. Large Cap Growth Fund. Previously, he was with CN Investments, where he was senior
investment officer.
William Downe is appointed deputy chair, Bank of Montreal and chief executive officer, BMO Nesbitt Burns.
Overseeing both the investment banking group and the private client group, he assumes responsibility for
all of the businesses in the Bank of Montreal Group of Companies in Canada and the U.S. directed at
corporate, institutional and individual investing clients.
