Benefits
Andrew Douglas is the new president and chair of the board of the
International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans for 2002. He was
president-elect and executive committee liaison to the International Foundation
Canadian Board in 2001. Other officers include J. Nicholas Counter,
president-elect; Milton Johnson, treasurer; Steve Barger, secretary; Hannah
Sutton, immediate past president; and Anthony Caropreso, past president.
Towers Perrin has relocated Robert Tarvydas from its Hong Kong
office to Calgary. Tarvydas assumes the leadership of the rewards and
communications practices for the Vancouver and Calgary markets.
In Montreal, Towers Perrin announced that Pierre Geoffrion has
been appointed leader of the executive compensation, rewards and communications
practices. Geoffrion's team helps organizations develop compensation policies
for senior executives and employees and design pay and performance programs.
Elizabeth Scott has joined Cowan Wright Beauchamp Ltd. in
Waterloo, Ont. as vice-president, health and disability management. Scott has
experience developing strategies to reduce disability costs and contribute to
employee wellness.
Four members have been appointed to the Canadian Institutes of Health
Research (CIHR) governing council. The new members are Francoise
Baylis (N.S.), Hubert Gauthier (Man.) and Carol Richards
(Que.). Steven Lewis (Sask.) was reappointed. CIHR's governing council
consists of 19 volunteer members from across the country who ensure that the
CIHR fulfills its mandate.
Sherry Lee Gregory joins Aon Consulting as a senior consultant.
She will be based in Aon's Halifax office. Gregory has 18 years experience in
the health and benefits sector.
Investments
David Dunlop retired from RBC Global Services as of Dec. 31.
Most recently Dunlop was senior managing director of global securities services
in Toronto. Dunlop will continue to work with the Canadian Capital Markets
Association as it moves to T+1 by June 2005.
Lewis Dubrofsky has been promoted to vice-president, legal, of
Fidelity Investments Canada Ltd. in Toronto. He joined Fidelity from
Torys, where he was an associate, in 1999. His previous position at Fidelity was
senior legal counsel.
The board of directors of The Co-operators Group Ltd. in Guelph, Ont.
has appointed Katherine Bardswick as the new president and chief
executive officer. Bardswick is currently the chief executive officer of the
Sovereign General Insurance Company and L'Union Canadienne Compagnie
d'Assurances.
Glenn Goucher has moved from Scotia Capital, where he was director of
sales and marketing, equity derivatives, to Bourse de Montréal where he
is vice-president of sales and marketing.
GE Asset Management Canada has appointed Christian Langevin as
vice-president, investment management. Langevin is based in Montreal and manages
a Canadian equity portfolio and leads GE Asset Management's equity team.
Cathy Singer has joined the law firm Ogilvy Renault in Toronto
as a partner. She will be practicing in the business law group. Singer practices
in the areas of corporate and securities law and will work in the buisness law
group.
Richard Bell is the new chief executive officer of the SSQ
Financial Group in Sainte-Foy, Que. Bell joined SSQ in 1988 and is a Fellow
of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries and of the Society of Actuaries.
Pensions
The California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS) promoted
Mark Anson to chief investment officer.
Anson currently oversees global equities, which are 60% of CalPERS' US$144
billion portfolio.
Brent Duguid has joined the law firm Fasken Martineau in
Toronto as an associate in pension and benefits. He was formerly with Miller
Thomson, also of Toronto. Duguid has previous regulatory experience with the
Financial Securities Commission of Ontario and in the legal department of
Ontario Hydro. Duguid provides advice on compliance and regulatory issues
including the establishment, ongoing administration and wind-up of pension
plans.
Deborah Lomow is senior vice-president of corporate pensions, for
Scotiabank in Toronto. Most recently she was vice-president and actuary
of corporate pensions. BC
