CPBI conference stands by Toronto
01-05-2003
Jim MacDonald
The Canadian Pension and Benefits Institute (CPBI) has decided to keep its national conference in Toronto, despite concerns about an outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). The CPBI said it received several inquiries about SARS from members regarding the annual conference, scheduled for June 4-6 in downtown Toronto.
"CPBI has been closely monitoring developments related to SARS, with concern for the health and safety of national conference participants," said a statement from the organization on April 30. "Following careful examination of the situation, including reports from various regional, national and international health authorities, we are pleased to announce that the conference is proceeding as scheduled."
Several other organizations cancelled conferences or meetings that were scheduled to be held in Toronto because of the SARS scare. Twenty-three people in Ontario have died of SARS; however, most of the people infected with the respiratory disease have recovered. Health officials said there are signs that the disease is being contained, and the World Health Organization lifted its travel advisory on Toronto in late April.
