Retirement Trends
Emerging from the recession blues
It's been a challenging year for defined contribution (DC) plan members and the plan sponsors who fielded their questions, concerns and complaints. In the face of what has been called the Great Recession, with stock markets continuing to experience tremendous volatility, federal and provincial politicians, providers and plan sponsors have become engaged in a national debate about retirement income adequacy.
The result is an environment in which the rules of the game may change thanks to new legislation and regulations. It's also a moment of opportunity for the industry to participate in an open dialogue with politicians and regulators to improve plan features and accessibility.
