The union that represents thousands of New Brunswick firefighters, correctional officers, school workers and hospital employees is warning the government not to mess with public-sector pensions.

The provincial government called for a review in its recent budget, but so far it has not disclosed any details.

Danny Legere, president of the New Brunswick branch of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), says if Premier David Alward is thinking about a two-tier pension plan for public-sector workers, he should think again.

A two-tier pension plan would allow current union members to keep their DB pension plan, but new members would be enrolled in a DC plan.

Legere says CUPE’s greatest concern is the systematic reduction in government revenues from personal and corporate income tax cuts.
