Medavie Blue Cross is making a virtual diabetes care management program available to its plan members.

In partnership with Roche Diabetes Care Canada and Ellerca Health, the digital program integrates personalized coaching, home delivery of test strips and glucose monitoring to support plan members living with diabetes, pre-diabetes, high blood pressure and/or high cholesterol. The program will be available to plan members through the insurer’s digital health platform.

Almost 11 million Canadians are living with diabetes or pre-diabetes, according to Diabetes Canada. The coronavirus pandemic has reduced in-person access to health professionals for people living with chronic diseases, such as diabetes, who often need to engage with a health-care practitioner multiple times a year, noted a Medavie press release. Virtual care can provide an alternative to people living with chronic diseases, including diabetes, during the ongoing public-health crisis, it added.
