Today is Rare Disease Day and more than 80 countries around the world are participating in the cause.

Approximately three million Canadians have a rare disorder while many others are affected or at risk but remain undiagnosed and unaware.

Right now, only 60% of treatments for rare disorders make it into Canada and most get approved up to six years later than in the United States and Europe.

The Canadian Organization for Rare Diseases will hold its Rare Disease Day 2014 Conference in Ottawa on Monday.

Our coverage of the Employers Cancer Care Summit, scheduled to appear in the May issue of Benefits Canada, will have more about rare cancers and personalized therapies.
