Wellness programs help workers keep their resolutions

American workers see workplace wellness programs as essential for keeping their New Year’s resolutions, according to a 2014 poll commissioned by Workplace Options, an employee effectiveness company.

Of the poll respondents who made resolutions for this year, 27% aimed to lose weight, 25% hoped to exercise more, and 6% wanted to quit smoking.

More than half (55%) of all respondents indicated that if an employer provided resources such as free access to weight loss coaching, tobacco cessation programs and an on-site gym, they would be more likely to stick with their goals.

Specifically, 49% of respondents said that company-provided access to weight loss coaching would help people be successful. Forty-three percent thought that employees would benefit from tobacco-cessation programs. Fifty-nine percent indicated that an on-site gym would be helpful in keeping resolutions.

“Employers should remember that providing access to wellness programs benefits the company just as much as it benefits the employee,” says Dean Debnam, CEO of Workplace Options. “Healthier employees miss less work and are more productive when they are at work. That affects the bottom line, in addition to creating a positive company culture.”

The survey polled 693 working Americans.
