The third episode of Benefits Canada‘s new podcast, Human Resourcefulness, looks at the role of the human resources manager through Toby Flenderson of The Office.

Our experts are blunt — the passive and indiscrete Toby isn’t great at his job. But what do you do when a Toby walks off the screen and into your office? Priya Sarin (Whitten & Lublin), Norm Sabapathy (Cadillac Fairview Corp. Ltd.) and Gord Frost (Mercer) share their thoughts on how to deal with an ineffective human resources team.

Clips in this podcast are from the following episodes of The Office (U.S. version), produced by Deedle-Dee Productions and Reveille Productions, in association with Universal Television: “The Chump” (2010, Season 6, Episode 25) by written Aaron Shure and “Gay Witch Hunt” (2006, Season 3, Episode 1) by Greg Daniels.

We have an HR representative who is totally detached. He does nothing, accomplishes nothing and is of no value as a resource or in an expertise role. Management likes him as he creates no waves and simply rubber stamps what management wants to have happen. How can we encourage him to actively participate in the employees’ behalf as well as the managements?
