The Municipal Pension Plan (MPP) is a public sector, defined benefit, multi-employer pension plan serving 395,000 members across several sectors including local government, health, education, and social services. It is the largest public sector pension plan in British Columbia and the sixth-largest defined benefit pension plan in Canada, with more than $70 billion in assets. The Plan is governed by the Municipal Pension Board of Trustees, a 32-member governing body appointed by Plan employers and Plan members, representing the interests of the beneficiaries. The Board and its committees are supported on administrative and technical matters by the Office of the Municipal Pension Plan Board of Trustees. Day-to-day pension administration is provided by the BC Pension Corporation. Investment management is provided by the BC Investment Management Corporation under service contracts with the Board, while legal and actuarial services are provided by contractors.
The retirement of a long standing and highly capable incumbent has led to the need for a new Executive Director. The Executive Director is the senior executive of the Municipal Pension Plan. The ED is responsible for providing strategic leadership and advice to the Municipal Pension Board of Trustees (board). The Executive Director reports to the Board chair, leads the Office of the Municipal Pension Board of Trustees, overseeing the small team of technical, governance and administrative staff. The Executive Director will play a key role in aligning and leveraging the large Board and its committees and will steward overall Board performance and Plan management. As the face of the MPP, the Executive Director will serve as the ‘point person’ for MPP’s numerous service provider relationships.
The ideal candidate will bring a demonstrated track record of success as a hands-on leader who has worked in a complex environment providing advice to a diverse group of stakeholders. Ideally, this experience will be complemented by pension expertise and familiarity with the BC pension model. Visionary and proactive, with advanced interpersonal skills, the preferred candidate will orchestrate the complex delivery of a wide variety of technical services.
