General Motors of Canada is facing a lawsuit from a group of retired white-collar workers.

The complaint is led by Joseph O’Neill, a former manager at GM’s Oshawa, Ont. truck plant. It alleges that GM Canada violated its contractual obligations by rolling back post-retirement benefits in recent years.

O’Neill belongs to a group representing more than 3,500 retired employees of the automaker and was a GM employee for nearly 40 years. He is seeking the restoration of retirement benefits—either in full or partially, so all retirees get a proportionate share.

CPPIB takes Manhattan

The CPP Investment Board has inked a deal for 45% minority stakes in two New York City office properties, in a deal valued at US$663 million (C$679.6 million). The two properties have a combined value of US$1.45 billion

The deal marks the CPPIB’s first foray into the Manhattan real estate market.

“We are pleased to enter the Manhattan office market with the acquisition of interests in two premier Class A office properties,” said Peter Ballon, CPPIB’s head of real-estate investments for the Americas.

“We believe it is an attractive time to enter the New York market. These transactions reflect CPPIB’s growing reputation as a major global real estate investor with the capital, and more importantly, the internal capabilities to directly participate in large complex transactions such as these.”

Employers flexible on summer hours

Almost half of Canadian employers offer flexible work hour arrangements during the summer, according to a Rapid Ready survey by Aon Consulting.

The poll finds that 48% of the 477 organizations surveyed say they offer some flexible work hour arrangements during the summer, while 52% do not. Among companies with flexible hour arrangements, the most common practice for compressing the work week involved working an extra half to one hour each day in order to leave earlier every Friday.

Fifty-four percent of organizations surveyed have an official company-wide policy for summer hours, while 46% require management approval prior to opting to follow their summer hours policy.

While the majority of survey participants (70%) do not offer flexible work hours throughout the year, those who do are responding in creative ways, according to Aon. Ultimately, Canadian employers who make an effort to demonstrate this degree of flexibility in their work environments recognize that additional down time, particularly during the summer season, is a tremendous value proposition to employees.
