Ensuring positive long-term results with a substance abuse program requires employers to have a well thought out plan.

Employers need to make sure employees understand that there is help available, but employers also need to encourage employees to act and take responsibility.

“The big message you want to give to people is that they are responsible,” says Dr. Ray Baker, associate clinical professor at the University of B.C. and co-owner and Medical Director, HealthQuest Occupational Health Corp. speaking at the 2012 Benefits and Pension Summit.

“We – the insurers, the employers – will offer you all the help you need but we expect you to take responsibility for following the help, getting the assessment, following through with treatment.”
