With employers around the world forced to move to a work-from-home model in the face of the coronavirus pandemic, Twitter Inc. says it will allow employees to continue to work from “forever.”

In a blog post, Jennifer Christie, the organization’s vice-president of people, said Twitter was uniquely positioned to be able to respond quickly and allow its staff to work from home over the past two months, given its emphasis on decentralization and supporting a distributed workforce capable of working from anywhere.

“The past few months have proven we can make that work. So if our employees are in a role and situation that enables them to work from home and they want to continue to do so forever, we will make that happen. If not, our offices will be their warm and welcoming selves, with some additional precautions, when we feel it’s safe to return.”

Christie also said that, while opening Twitter’s offices will the company’s decision, it will be up to employees when they want to come back.

In March, Twitter made working from home mandatory for all global employees. In addition, the company continued to pay labour costs to cover standard working hours for contractors and hourly employees who weren’t able to work from home. It also provided reimbursement for all employees toward set-up expenses for home offices.
