Conservatives vote against NDP motion to expand CPP

The Conservatives voted down a motion by the National Democratic Party to expand the Canada Pension Plan (CPP) in the House of Commons on Monday.

“Canada cannot afford not to invest in improving retirement security,” official opposition pensions critic Murray Rankin said after the defeat of his motion.

Separately, CARP said its members are shifting their support away from the Conservatives because of its stance against CPP expansion until the economy recovers.

In a recent survey, 43% say they will vote Liberal in the next election, compared with just 31% who will vote Conservative. (The NDP takes 21%.)

In addition, 71% of members say the current government doesn’t deserve power if it doesn’t increase CPP contributions and benefits.

The federal, provincial and territorial finance ministers will discuss CPP reform when they meet in Meech Lake, Que., next Monday.
