Jia Wang, senior fellow, University of Alberta’s China Institute and senior fellow, Asia Pacific Foundation
Jia Wang is a senior fellow at the University of Alberta’s China Institute, where she has held senior leadership roles since 2011, including interim director and deputy director. She is also a senior fellow at the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada and a member of the Canada–U.S. Commission on China, convened by the Wilson Center in Washington, D.C.
With more than 18 years of management and policy experience, Wang specializes in the political economy of China, China’s foreign policy and Canada–China relations. At the China Institute, she oversees organizational operations and leads numerous policy research initiatives examining Canada’s diplomatic, trade, investment and energy linkages with China. She provides strategic advice on China-related policy and risk assessment to leaders across academia, government and the private sector.
A frequent media commentator, speaker and moderator, Wang regularly contributes to international, national and local dialogues on geopolitics and China’s global role. Prior to joining the China Institute, she worked as a television news reporter, anchor and producer with OMNI Television, covering major political, business and cultural developments. She was also a business consultant with Enbridge Pipelines Inc. and a conference interpreter at executive-level meetings and major international conferences.
Wang holds a bachelor of laws from Peking University and pursued doctoral studies at the University of Toronto. She has written columns for major Chinese-language media and has taught business communication and cross-cultural etiquette in Canada.
