GreenShield emerged as Canada’s top prize winner at Microsoft’s 2025 International Agentic AI Hackathon this spring, securing a coveted spot among 10 global finalists selected from 225 teams competing worldwide. For GreenShield, Canada’s only national non-profit health and benefits company, the achievement underscores the company’s commitment to innovative, purpose-driven solutions to support better health for all Canadians.

In partnership with IBM, GreenShield’s team of developers created a Microsoft Teams-integrated Reporting Agent that promises to transform how frontline Customer Service Representatives (CSRs) handle client reporting. The solution addresses a critical pain point: CSRs critically spend over a third of their time on plan sponsor reporting — processing requests for important information, such as “How many plan members hit their maximums last year?” or “How many diabetes-related claims were submitted over the past two years?” GreenShield’s new AI agent dramatically streamlines this process, saving significant time and resources.

The virtual Hackathon, which ran over an eight-week period this past spring, attracted more than 900 participants from around the world. GreenShield’s winning team was spearheaded by Kushal Munir, EVP, Head of IT, alongside Andrew Kemble, Manager, AI Enablement and Delivery; and Kruvil Patel, Senior Intelligent Automation Specialist.

“Harnessing cutting-edge technology for meaningful impact is our top priority,” says Munir. “We’re proud that our AI Reporting Agent can serve as an example of how purpose-driven innovation can enhance both our employee experience, operational efficiency and client experience. It’s not just about leveraging the latest technology — it’s about applying it strategically to advance our mission of Better Health for All.”

GreenShield’s AI-powered solution seamlessly integrates into existing Microsoft Teams workflows, enabling CSRs to generate comprehensive claims data and analytics with unprecedented speed and accuracy. By automating complex reporting tasks, the AI agent frees up valuable time for CSRs to focus on higher-value client interactions while ensuring consistently reliable, up-to-date reporting.

The AI Reporting Agent, now set for launch in early 2026, represents the latest milestone in GreenShield’s digital innovation journey. As a non-profit, and Canada’s only truly integrated health and benefits company, GreenShield approaches innovation through a lens of purpose rather than profit maximization.

This approach has resulted in a robust digital ecosystem anchored by GreenShield+, the company’s unique integrated health and benefits platform, and enhanced by GreenShield Ventures, their digital innovation arm.

GreenShield’s Hackathon success highlights the growing sophistication of Canadian AI development capabilities on the global stage and, says Munir, “it demonstrates that purpose-driven organizations can compete effectively with traditional tech companies when innovation is clearly aligned with mission.”
