OMERS appoints independent board chair

The Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System (OMERS) has appointed George Cooke to the newly created role of independent board chair at the OMERS Administration Corporation.

The appointment is effective October 1, 2013. The independent board chair position was a key recommendation of the 2012 Dean Report on OMERS governance.

Earlier this year, Cooke retired from The Dominion of Canada General Insurance Company after serving there for over 20 years as CEO and a director. After retiring, he established Martello Associates Consulting, a business strategy company, where he is currently the president.

Cooke is also an advisor to the CEO of Intelligent Mechatronic Systems, a Canadian telematics company. Additionally, he is involved with several not-for-profit organizations.

Cooke holds an MBA and an honours BA from Queens University, as well as a Legum Doctor degree from Assumption University. He has also been awarded an Honourary Chartered Insurance Professional designation by the Insurance Institute of Canada.
