Flaherty resigns

Federal Finance Minister Jim Flaherty has decided to resign from cabinet and prepare to go back to work in the private sector.

A replacement wasn’t named.

“Yesterday, I informed the prime minister that I am resigning from cabinet,” he said in a written statement. “This was a decision I made with my family earlier this year, as I will be returning to the private sector.”

He said the decision to leave politics was not related in any way to his health. Last year, Flaherty announced he had a dermatological condition.

“This decision was made because it is the right one for me and my family at this time,” he wrote.

Flaherty entered politics in 1995 as served as a member of provincial parliament in Ontario for a decade and was the province’s finance minister between February 2001 and April 2002. He resigned from provincial politics to enter federal politics in 2005. Flaherty became the finance minister in 2006.
