It’s something that keeps many Americans up at night: worrying about whether they have enough money to retire.
The Harris Poll survey finds that three-quarters of adults who haven’t retired say they worry about having enough money to retire, and seven in 10 of this group say planning for retirement is a key priority for them.
One thing those not retired are not planning for is social security—just about one-third (35%) say they have faith in social security being there when they retire. This drops to 27% of millennials and three in 10 generation Xers.
Almost seven in 10 Americans say they are currently putting money away.
One reason for those who aren’t may be that 46% of unretired adults say they live paycheque to paycheque and can’t afford to put money in savings. Among those saving, the top goals are rainy day funds for unexpected costs (65%) and retirement (52%). But those saving are also doing so for some fun reasons, as three in 10 are saving for a vacation.
Not surprisingly, priorities change considerably by age. Just two in five millennials are saving for retirement, while more than three in five gen Xers and baby boomers say they are.
Nearly 2,300 non-retired adults took part in the survey.
