Canada is top spot for expat retirement

Canada may be cold, but many foreign-born individuals choose to spend their golden years here.

Three in 10 expats currently living in Canada identified themselves as retired, making the country home to the highest proportion of expat retirees in the world. The global average is just over one in 10.

This is according to the 2014 HSBC Expat Explorer report.

The study showed that eight in 10 retired expats here feel confident about Canada’s economy, so they choose to keep the majority of their retirement investments in Canada. This is almost double the global average of 41%.

The study also revealed that nine in 10 expats say they feel a strong connection with Canada, well above the global average of 62%, which could be a factor for those expats choosing to retire here.

Additionally, more than six in 10 expats here say they find it easy to make friends in Canada.
