How does a toxic employee compared to hiring a superstar?

This is the question asked by Dylan Minor, a visiting assistant professor at Harvard Business School, and Michael Housman, chief analytics officer at Cornerstone OnDemand, in a study of nearly 60,000 employees across 11 organizations across various organizations.

According to the Harvard Business Review, Minor and Housman found that a single toxic employee wipes out the gains for more than two superstar employees. A superstar, according to the study, is defined as the top 1% of workers in terms of productivity, adding about $5,000 a year to a company’s profile, while a toxic employee costs about $12,000 a year.
