Canada’s top female entrepreneurs discuss work-life balance

Is it even possible for an entrepreneur to achieve work-life balance? The answer is “yes”— and “no.”

As Benefits Canada‘s sister site ProfitGuide.com publishes its 2016 W100 ranking of Canada’s Top Female Entrepreneurs, the leaders say it’s not about following anyone else’s definition of a harmonious life — it’s about finding a mix that works for you. Laura Williams, principal and founder of Williams HR Law Professional Corp., highlights the importance of facing workplace issues, no matter how difficult. “If you don’t deal with the tough people-management issues, you lose credibility,” she says. “And you won’t meet your business objectives over the long run — at least not easily.”

Mandy Rennehan, the founder and chief executive officer of specialized construction firm Freshco, shares her thoughts on the importance of hiring right. “A lot of companies today [will write] a job description based on skill set,” she says. “I’m more interested in their mindset.”
