N.B. plans catastrophic drug coverage

New Brunswick, one of two provinces without catastrophic drug coverage, plans to roll out part of the program as early as this fall.

The province hopes to have the full plan in place before the September 2014 election.

“I’ll set my career on it,” Hugh Flemming, the minister of health, told the legislature on Tuesday. “We’re going to have a prescription drug plan so that every New Brunswicker will have prescription drug coverage. The expensive drugs will be covered.”

New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island are the only two provinces without a catastrophic drug plan.

P.E.I.’s government plans to have its catastrophic drug program ready by October.
