U.S. government shuts down as health insurance exchanges open

The United States government closed offices and shut down numerous services on Tuesday after Republicans tried to undermine the Affordable Care Act.

The shutdown came the same day health insurance exchanges opened for business.

House Republicans tried to defund or delay parts of the healthcare law, but Democrats in the Senate rejected the changes.

President Barack Obama will discuss the shutdown and the opening of the healthcare exchanges on Tuesday afternoon.
