New tool helps B.C. employers fit wellness into workday

Employers in British Columbia have a new tool at their disposal to help promote workplace wellness.

The Canadian Cancer Society and the Government of B.C., have launched WellnessFits—a new program designed to encourage healthy workplaces and employee wellness programs.

WellnessFits offers online, email and telephone support, as well as on-site consultations. The program’s website (wellnessfits.ca) offers information on healthy eating, physical activity, healthy minds and being tobacco-free in the workplace to help reduce the risk of cancer and other chronic diseases. Assessment services and advice are available to small, medium and large businesses free of charge.

“We know many businesses care about the health and wellness of their employees and WellnessFits is a great resource to get them started,” said Cathy Adair, vice-president of cancer control with the Canadian Cancer Society.

“We know that a healthy workplace has a positive return on investment for business through reduced absenteeism and increased productivity,” said B.C. Health Minister Michael de Jong. “A healthy workplace also helps businesses position themselves to attract and retain the brightest and the best in a competitive job market.”
