Global asset manager MFS Investment Management has appointed Edward M. Maloney as chief investment officer, effective Jan. 1, 2019.

Maloney will succeed Michael Roberge, who will continue at MFS as chief executive officer.

In the new role, Maloney will lead a team of more than 200 global investment professionals and oversee investment research, portfolio management, trading and investment risk management. He will also join MFS’s management committee.

“Ted brings extensive experience to the role having held multiple investment research positions at the firm during his tenure,” said Roberge in a press release. “He has worked across the equity, fixed income and quantitative groups to build strong, collaborative relationships that will serve him well as CIO.”

Since joining MFS in 2005 as an equity research analyst, Maloney was named director of U.S. equity research in 2011, took on portfolio management duties as a global sector leader and then was appointed co-manager of diversified portfolios in 2012. In 2016, he was named global director of research.

“Ted’s appointment is consistent with MFS’ long‐term approach to succession planning and is the culmination of a process begun years ago, when we recognized he possessed the leadership skills and investment acumen for such a role,” said Roberge.
