AB not-for-profit offers financial fitness courses

You want your employees to quit smoking, eat healthy and exercise regularly, but are you concerned about how they handle their finances? Given that financial problems can make employees stressed and unproductive at work, perhaps employers should encourage staff to get financially fit.

An Alberta-based not-for-profit credit counselling agency, called Money Mentors, is helping people do just that. It offers free financial fitness classes throughout the year that focus on various financial matters. Topics include successful money management, proactive budgeting, saving strategies, debt management, using credit wisely, how and when to plan for retirement, and ways to teach kids the value of hard-earned money.

The next free seminar in Alberta will focus on tackling debt. The session will be offered on April 10 in Medicine Hat, Red Deer, Grand Prairie, Lethbridge, Calgary and Edmonton, and will run from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Topics will include how to keep your credit history in good shape and understanding exactly how to build borrowing-power for the future by dealing with debts today.

For plan sponsors not in Alberta, the site also includes free resources on financial literacy for employees.
