Alberta launches investigation after laptop with health records stolen

Alberta’s privacy commissioner has launched an investigation into a privacy breach after a laptop containing the health records of 620,000 residents was stolen.

A broader review into how health sector privacy breaches are reported in Alberta will also be taken.

The laptop was stolen in September from an IT consultant working for Medicentres Family Health Care Clinics. The company learned of the theft in October and immediately notified the privacy commissioner and the Edmonton police.

However, Medicentres only notified the Alberta Ministry of Health earlier this week.

The laptop contained the names, dates of birth, provincial health card numbers, billing codes and diagnostic codes of 620,000 Albertans.
