Anthem nears deal to buy Cigna: Reports

American health insurer Anthem will announce a deal to acquire its rival Cigna as early as Friday, reports say.

CNBC and The Wall Street Journal say Anthem will pay US$188 a share for Cigna.

Last month, Cigna turned down an offer of US$184 a share.

The proposed transaction comes just a couple weeks after Aetna announced it would buy Humana.

If both deals are approved by regulators, there would be just three large health insurers in the United States.
