CLHIA elects Mark Sylvia as chair

The Canadian Life and Health Insurance Association has elected Mark Sylvia, president and chief executive officer of the Empire Life Insurance Co., as its new chair.

According to the association, Sylvia will work alongside chair-elect Alka Gautam, president and chief executive officer of RGA Life Reinsurance Co. of Canada, and past chair Paul Mahon, president and chief executive officer of Great-West Life Assurance Co., London Life Insurance Co. and the Canada Life Assurance Co.

“The year ahead is shaping up to be one of the most dynamic that the life and health insurance industry has ever experienced with national pharmacare and distribution issues, such as compensation disclosure in group products, at the top of our list,” said Sylvia, in a news release. “Our industry is a key contributor to Canada’s economic success and my goal is to make sure that our voice continues to be heard.”

The board also includes:

  • Arnie Arnott, president and chief executive officer of Saskatchewan Blue Cross;
  • James Boyle, president and chief executive officer of Foresters Financial;
  • Steve Bradie, president and chief executive officer of Green Shield Canada;
  • Jean-François Chalifoux, chief executive officer of SSQ Life Insurance Co. Inc.;
  • Yvon Charest, president and chief executive officer of iA Financial Group;
  • Gregory Chrispin, president and chief executive officer of Desjardins Insurance;
  • Mark Cummings, president and chief executive officer of Teachers Life Insurance Society;
  • Michael Doughty, president and chief executive officer of Manulife Financial Corp.;
  • Jacques Goulet, president of Sun Life Financial Inc.;
  • Christopher Knight, senior vice-president of life, health and creditor products at TD Life Insurance Co.;
  • Neil Skelding, chairman of the board at RBC Life Insurance Co.; and
  • Stephen Frank, president and chief executive officer of the Canadian Life and Health Insurance Association.
