CUPE wants CPP expansion

The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) is calling on the federal government to address the issue of retirement security by expanding the Canada Pension Plan.

“All Canadians deserve to retire with dignity,” says CUPE national president Paul Moist. “A gradual and modest expansion of the Canada Pension Plan is the best way to ensure retirement security for Canadians.”

Without adequate retirement incomes, seniors will experience a decline in living standards, and there will be an increase in seniors’ poverty, he adds.

CUPE says that more than 11 million workers don’t have workplace pension plans and that the majority of Canadians and provincial leaders are in favour of expansion.

“Clearly, there is a willingness among business, labour and political leaders to address this issue,” Moist explains. “What we need now is real leadership from our federal government.”
