OMERS hires entrepreneur in residence

OMERS Ventures, the venture capital investment arm of the OMERS pension plan, is hiring Haroon F. Mirza for the newly created role of entrepreneur in residence.

In this position, Mirza will contribute to identifying and realizing investment opportunities in the technology, media and telecommunications sectors.

Prior to joining OMERS Ventures, Mirza worked at Intel Corp. as director of business development in the field of anonymous viewer analytics.

Before that, he was the co-founder and CEO of CognoVision, an award-winning retail analytics provider. CognoVision was named Canada’s most innovative company in 2009 and was acquired by Intel in September 2010.

Mirza has also worked as a consultant for the Carleton University Foundry Program, evaluating technology startups and obtaining pre-seed capital to commercialize on-campus technologies.

He serves on the board of The Indus Entrepreneurs Toronto, which is part of a global non-profit network of entrepreneurs, and acts as a mentor there. Mirza also serves as a mentor with two startup programs at the Toronto-based innovation hub MaRS Discovery District, Extreme Startups and JOLT.

Mirza graduated from Carleton University’s Sprott School of Business and from Harvard Business School’s program for leadership development.
