Quebec raising minimum wage

Quebec plans to increase its minimum wage by 2% at the beginning of May.

Employers will now have to pay an additional 20 cents or $10.35 an hour. For companies in the service industry, they will need to pay workers who earn tips an extra 15 cents or $8.90 an hour.

Quebec’s largest employers group, Le Conseil du patronat du Québec, says the increase appears to be reasonable as it protects the purchasing power of low-income workers while respecting the capacity to pay of employers.

Last month, Ontario said it would increase its minimum wage by 7.3% to $11 an hour in June; Nova Scotia plans a 1.5% increase to $10.30 an hour in April.
