McKesson CEO’s pension: US$159 million

McKesson chairman and CEO John Hammergren would have received a lump-sum pension benefit of US$159 million had he voluntarily left the company at the end of March, according to a regulatory filing.

The Wall Street Journal reports that the value of his pension has more than doubled in six years.

Compensation consultants tell the paper that it’s the largest pension for a current executive of a public company and the biggest ever in the United States.

The 54-year-old Hammergren joined the healthcare services and IT firm in a senior position in 1996. He was promoted to co-CEO in 1999 and became the sole CEO two years later.

McKesson’s stock has more than tripled under his leadership and significantly outperformed the market.

News Corp. CEO Rupert Murdoch has the second highest pension benefit, $73.9 million, for a current executive. The 82-year-old has run the company for more than 60 years.
