The global economy has changed dramatically over the last decade, but Canadian plan sponsors are holding back. Today, emerging markets economies account for about 50% of global gross domestic product, and yet only 16% of Canadian pension funds report using an emerging markets manager. This low percentage shows that more education and dialogue are needed to help plan sponsors become more comfortable integrating these markets into their portfolios.

To get the conversation started, we hosted a roundtable on March 6 in Toronto. The panel of experts discussed key issues facing investors in emerging markets today, from geopolitical risk to rising labour costs that are rapidly shrinking margins. They tell us how emerging markets have evolved from being just a small sliver of the global market to becoming a large and expanding opportunity set that goes beyond borders and limiting monikers like “BRIC” and “frontier.”
