A new collective agreement reached by United Steelworkers members at mining company Goldcorp Inc. in Timmins, Ont. includes improvements to pensions and benefits.
Some 280 members of the union’s Local 7580 voted on Monday to ratify the agreement, which will provide pension benefit increases of more than eight per cent over its three-year term, to $66 a month per year of service. As well, the new agreement has reduced the qualifying age for a full pension to 62. It had previously been age 63 and will increase to age 66 when the new agreement runs out.

It also includes several upgrades to benefits, including an increase to short-term disability to $225 per week and an increase to parental leave top-up to $225 per week. The contract also includes new provisions to support employees affected by domestic violence.
“I congratulate Steelworkers Local 7580 members for building on the progress made over the years to improve their working and living standards, from wages and benefits to pensions and health and safety,” said Marty Warren, United Steelworkers’ Ontario director.
