Retailer ending health benefits for some part-time employees

Walmart will no longer offer health benefits to part-time employees in the United States who work less than 30 hours a week.

It will impact about 2% of the company’s total workforce starting next year.

The retailer notes on its blog that other retailers such as Target, Home Depot, Walgreens and Trader Joe’s no longer provide health benefits to part-time workers.

Walmart will work with a specialist, HealthCompare, to personally guide its associates through the process of finding replacement coverage.

“Like every company, Walmart continues to face rising healthcare costs,” writes Sally Welborn, the retailer’s senior vice-president of global benefits. “This year, the expenses were significant and led us to make some tough decisions as we begin our annual enrollment.”
