UPS to stop delivering spousal benefits coverage

UPS plans to stop offering healthcare coverage to some of its employees’ spouses in 2014, partly due to the new U.S. healthcare law.

In a memo to employees, rising costs for coverage of chronic conditions, combined with the costs associated with the Affordable Care Act, “have made it increasingly difficult to continue providing the same level of healthcare benefits to our employees at an affordable cost.”

The changes will affect about half of the 33,000 spouses whos are covered under the non-unionized plan and who can get coverage at their workplace.

Spouses who are unable to get their own coverage through work or those who are married to unionized employees will not be affected.
