Impact of arthritis widespread

September is Arthritis Awareness Month, and the disease impacts workers of all ages.

A survey by The Arthritis Society finds that 63% rate the intensity of their ongoing pain as six or higher out of 10, and 41% say arthritis was “very” or “extremely” limiting to their quality of life.

Twenty-eight percent say pain disrupts normal activities every month, and 27% of respondents say that arthritis affects at least six different joints in their body.

“Whoever we are, wherever we live, arthritis has changed the life of someone we know, someone we care about—whether we realize it or not,” says Janet Yale, president and CEO of The Arthritis Society.

In support of the more than 4.6 million Canadians living with the disease, The Arthritis Society is kicking off September with a Voices of Arthritis video series featuring well-known Canadians from different walks of life telling their arthritis stories.

Those participating in the videos include Lloyd Robertson, veteran news anchor; Kelsey Serwa, Olympic silver medal skier; Amy Cotton, two-time Olympic wrestler; Hugo Girard, six-time champion, Canada’s Strongest Man; and Richard Turcotte, Quebec radio broadcaster.
