ETF Assets in Canada Up 28.2% in 2017

looniesAssets invested in Canadian exchange-traded funds have climbed 28.2% in 2017 up to a new record of US$108 billion at the end of September. That’s according to the latest data from London-based ETFGI. All in, there are now 535 ETFs in Canada, with 659 listings on 2 exchanges from 25 providers.While equity ETFs saw outflows during the month of September, fixed income pulled in more assets.

Specific findings:

  • Equity ETFs experienced net outflows of US$409 Mn in in September, bringing year to date net inflows to US$6.40 Bn, which is much greater than the net inflows of US$4.02 Bn over the same period last year and more than the US$6.21 Bn gathered in all 2016.
  • Fixed income ETFs gathered US$202 Mn in net inflows in September, growing year to date net inflows to US$3.69 Bn, which is less than the same period last year which saw net inflows of US$4.32 Bn.
  • Commodity ETFs had net outflows of US$1 Mn in September. Year to date, net inflows are at US$40 Mn, compared to net inflows of US$243 Mn over the same period last year.
