The University of Toronto Asset Management Corp. is appointing Chuck O’Reilly as its next president and chief investment officer.

O’Reilly, the UTAM’s senior portfolio manager and head of public equities, is replacing Daren Smith, who held both roles at the $13-billion pension, assets and endowment fund since 2016. Prior to joining the UTAM in 2011, O’Reilly served as a portfolio manager for the fund management group at Ontario Power Generation Inc.

The leadership transition is scheduled for the end of July. As the incoming president and CIO, O’Reilly will begin his tenure by transferring the UTAM’s pension assets to the University Pension Plan Ontario, which launched on July 1. The new fund will also serve plan members and retirees at Queen’s University and the University of Guelph.

“I’m excited for the opportunity to build on the successful, sustainable investment approach that Daren played such a key role in establishing, and to continue to generate great returns for the university going forward,” O’Reilly said in a press release.
