Ontario Teachers’ re-appoints chair and two directors to its board

The Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan has re-appointed Bill Chinery and John Murray to its board for two-year terms commencing Jan. 1, 2017, as well as re-appointing Jean Turmel to another two-year term as the board’s chair.

Murray has 35 years of experience as a global macro-economist and was the deputy governor of the Bank of Canada from 2008 until his retirement. Chinery’s 30-year career included actuarial experience with Manulife and Mercer, where he expanded into pension plan management, as well as senior investment management roles with BlackRock Canada and BlackRock/Barclays Global Investors.

Turmel worked for 25 years at the National Bank of Canada, where he retired as president of financial markets, treasury and investment bank. He has more than 40 years of capital markets experience, with roles at Merrill Lynch Canada Inc., Royal Securities Corp. Ltd. and RBC Dominion Securities Inc. prior to joining National Bank in 1981.

Director and chair appointments are for two years, renewable for a maximum of four terms. Each plan sponsor appoints five directors and jointly appoints an eleventh person to serve as chair.
