Portugal to raise retirement age

Portugal plans to raise its retirement age by one year to 66 as part of an effort to reduce its budget deficit.

The country also announced that it would cut more than 30,000 civil service jobs and increase working hours for public sector employees by one hour a day to 40 hours per week.

The government anticipates that the proposals will save it €4.8 billion over three years.

The European Commission, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund will be in Lisbon on Tuesday to evaluate the proposed cuts.
