Engaging members is one of the most difficult challenges for plan sponsors, says Michelle Peshko, senior advisor, pensions and investments for Xstrata. She says the wide ranging demographic of your audience—some are engaged, some have families, some are investment savvy, some are disinterested—makes it difficult to engage all employees with just one approach.

Instead, Peshko recommends taking a closer look at your demographics and developing a long-term communication plan that is more strategic. Instead of offering one standard information session, she suggests offering a series of sessions and programs that gradually build on ideas and terminology over time and, ideally, bring your plan members up to speed without relying on a one-size-fits-all approach.
