New psychotherapy legislation can boost benefits offerings

The Lieutenant Governor of Ontario has just proclaimed the Psychotherapy Act, 2007, which means about 2,000 psychotherapists will now be working under these regulations using the title of registered psychotherapist.

This new legislation is expected to help employers enhance their benefits packages by providing greater access to reasonably priced mental health care, greater geographical reach and a wider range of treatment options.

Employers should consult their benefits providers about the possibility of adding registered psychotherapists to the list of eligible paramedical practitioners in their benefits plans.
