CalPERS holds back launch of pension database

The California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS) has delayed the release of pension data after one of its member associations planned to pursue legislation to limit the amount of data required to be released under the state’s Public Records Act.

“In accordance with our desire to protect the privacy and data of our members and only release that information which is legally required, CalPERS has decided to wait to see the outcome of this legislative effort and not release our planned pension database,” the pension fund said in a statement.

The database, which was set to launch next week, would be searchable and provide a retiree’s name and their gross monthly pension payment.

CalPERS said having such a database would make it more transparent and “safeguard the integrity of the data, rather than disperse files to news or other organizations to create their own databases.”
