Corporate wellness programs, which can include fitness and nutritional coaching, gym memberships and professional growth opportunities, can only augment employees’ overall health and well-being. Unfortunately, only 20% of Canadian employees enjoy these programs, according to a new online survey by Monster.ca.

Of the 2,800+ surveyed, only 10% said wellness programs were a waste of time. The remaining 70% wished their employers offered them.

Although Gabriel Bouchard, vice-president and general manager of Monster Canada, acknowledged that not all employees appreciate a wellness program, he did stress the benefits of having one. “Conventional research has always indicated that a contented and happy worker is typically more productive,” he said.

But health and wellness programs are not the only concern. Perks are, too. In a separate Monster.ca poll, less than 20% of the 3,600 surveyed receive perks such as pay increases or flexible schedules. In fact, most of the respondents said their employers are not doing much to retain them.

Bouchard recognizes that retaining employees is a concern in the workforce. “Employers will soon have to provide incentives to retain their employees or risk disruptions in productivity.”
